Interventional radiology is a subspecialty of radiology in which minimally invasive procedures are performed using image guidance. Some of these procedures are done for purely diagnostic purposes (e.g., angiogram), while others are done for treatment purposes (e.g., angioplasty). Pictures (images) are used to direct these procedures, which are usually done with needles or other tiny instruments like small tubes called catheters. The images provide road maps that allow the interventional radiologist to guide these instruments through the body to the areas of interest. For many years, surgery was the only treatment available for many conditions. Today, interventional radiology treatments are first-line care for a wide variety of conditions. It is important to know all of your treatment options before consenting to any procedure or surgery.
At Lake Region Healthcare (LRH), interventional radiology procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and on an inpatient basis for hospitalized patients. Interventional radiology also is available for emergency and trauma patients. Procedures we perform include but are not limited to:
New Minimally Invasive Treatment for Chronic Tendonitis
- Treatment for thoracic, abdominal and other aneurysms.
- Treatment for carotid artery disease.
- Treatment for arm claudication or vertebral insufficiency.
- Treatment for peripheral arterial vascular disease and ulcers/wounds.
- Treatment of renal artery hypertension.
- Treatment for active bleeding related to trauma, gastrointestinal ulcers, tumors, diverticulosis and hemoptysis.
- Treatment of arteriovenous malformations.
- Thrombolytic therapy for acute ischemia to the arm, leg or gut (mesentery).
- Thrombolytic therapy and throbectomy for treatment of acute stroke.
- Treatment of venous thromboembolic disease: deep venous (DVT) and pulmonary (PE) including thrombolytic therapy, thrombectomy and vena cava filter placement.
- Varicose and spider vein ablation.
- Chronic venous insufficiency of the legs.
- Treatment of venous occlusions causing arm or leg swelling, Budd Chiari syndrome, Thoracic outlet syndrome or SVC syndrome.
- Core biopsies of suspected tumor lesions.
- Endovascular therapy of primary and metastatic tumors to the liver, kidney, adrenal gland, spleen and bone with embolization, chemoembolization, chemodrug infused microbeads and/or radioactive spheres.
- Percutaneous ablative therapy for primary and metastatic disease to liver, lung, kidney, soft-tissue, adrenal gland and bone.
- Pleurex catheter placement for malignant pleural effusions and ascites.
- CT power-injectable chest ports and PICC lines.
- Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty for thoracic and lumbar vertebral body fractures.
- Steroid injections such as epidural, facet, and joint injections.
Other Percutaneous and Endoluminal Non-Vascular Therapy
- Draining of abscess, painful cysts and abnormal fluid collections.
- Thoracentesis, paracentesis and pleurodesis.
- Biopsies of thyroid, solid organ, soft tissue and bone mass/lesions.
- Treatment of bile duct and gallbladder disease through the placement of drainage tubes, cholangioplasty, metallic stents and stone extraction.
- Urinary interventions such as percutaneous nephrostomy, nephroureteral or internal ureteral stent placement.
- Gastrostomy or gastrojejunostomy feeding tubes.
- Central venous access, including hemodialysis catheter.
- Declotting of AV fistula hemodialysis patients.
- Catheter placement for peritoneal dialysis.
